respit care

For over 50 years, Cheyenne Village has been the premier non-profit organization serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We provide a variety of services that are individually tailored to meet the needs of each person, and we are committed to care for them across their adult lifespans.

Cheyenne Village is a member of the Colorado Respite Coalition and partners with Easter Seals Colorado.

Respite care is the provision of short-term, temporary relief to those who are caring for family members who might otherwise require permanent placement in a facility outside the home.

Respite programs provide planned short-term and time-limited breaks for families and other unpaid caregivers of adults with an intellectual or developmental disability in order to support and maintain the primary caregiving relationship. Respite also provides a positive experience for the person receiving care.

Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without some support, such as respite. Respite provides a break, which may prove beneficial to the health of the caregiver. In a recent survey by the Commonwealth Fund, 60 % of caregivers age 19-64, reported fair or poor health, one or more chronic conditions, or a disability.

Respite has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and wellbeing, avoid or delay out-of-home placements, and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect. Respite may also reduce the likelihood of divorce and help sustain marriages.

Cheyenne Village models for providing respite care:

  • Group respite care is available in six-hour increments on Saturdays.
  • Hourly care, in three-hour increments is provided by Cheyenne Village staff who are trained and experienced in working with your family member.  Respite care is provided in the individual’s home.
  • Overnight care will be provided by a trained Cheyenne Village Host Home Provider. Respite Care can be in your home, one of our Host Homes or a group home.
