Group Home Supports for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
The Cheyenne Village Pearl House for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
As I last wrote in November, Cheyenne Village provides the only Group Home support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Colorado Springs. Today, I wanted to highlight the Pearl House, providing 24-7 awake, overnight support for up to 6 residents.
The staff at the Pearl House are one of the most dedicated, compassionate and hard-working teams in this field. Their commitment has accomplished amazing things for the residents there, where individuals with significant needs have shown vast improvement in functioning level, engagement and overall happiness. They have navigated huge challenges, including illnesses and the loss of beloved residents who have passed away, with grace, compassion and outstanding dedication to quality of life, even to the end.
The house itself is beautiful. A custom-built, adobe style home in a quiet neighborhood, the home features bright, sunlit mirrored living and kitchen areas in an open floorplan with high ceilings, and single, private bedrooms set off of the living areas. Walk-in showers and multiple laundry areas help ensure that the home remains accessible and clean, and a dedicated medications room maintains both privacy and security for each of the residents’ medical needs. There is also a beautiful and private back patio which is fully accessible by wheelchair. Wide spaces and doorways throughout also provide full accessibility, even for larger wheelchairs and equipment. The functionality of the home is well-hidden by the beautiful high windows and comfortable furniture throughout the home. It’s a highly functional space for those with significant care needs, yet it feels like home.
